A worthy rival on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 is heading your way

What an overwhelmingly high score!

Mediatek has been releasing multiple midrange and budget chipsets lately with 5G capability. They continue to supply phone manufacturers these high-end, yet affordable, chipsets for both OEMs and ODMs.

Last month, Mediatek has been teasing of a 6nm chipset that could compete the likes of the Snapdragon 865. This particular chipset has a model number MT689x.

Recently, a benchmark score of 622,409 has appeared on AnTuTu. The chipset in question is the all-new Mediatek MT6893.

The listing on AnTuTu (codename: “alps”) listed the possible specifications for the new MediaTek chipset. The chipset is revealed to feature 4x Cortex-A78 CPU as well as 4x Cortex- A55 CPU that has a clock speed of 3Ghz. For the GPU, the chipset is equipped with Mali-G77 MC9

The chipset also supports up to 90hz refresh rate as well as LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 Storage. Refer to the screenshot above.

The listing above shows that the prototype device “alps” has 8GB RAM and 256GB storage and runs Android 11.

For comparison, here are the AnTuTu scores for the Exynos 1080 and Kirin 9000

As you can see above, the MT6893 of Mediatek is not too farfetched from the scores of Exynos 1080 and Kirin 9000. In fact, it’s very close. Probably the only reason why the MT6893 did not fare as high is because of the nanometer process it uses, as the other two chipsets are 5nm but the MT6893 uses a 6nm process.

However, the MT6893 blows away as it closes the gap for the Snapdragon 865 seen on Geekbench.

As you can see above, the single core score for codename “alps” is similar to that of the flagship Snapdragon 865. The chipset is only slightly beaten on the MultiCore score, with the MT6893 scoring 2948 and the Snapdragon 865 scoring 3104, respectively.

Same story goes for AnTuTu. The new MT6893 defeats the Snapdragon 865 in benchmark scores, with the SD865 faring 611,419 while the MT6893 faring a score of 622409.

Mediatek has been on the rise ever since they released their new line of G chipsets, as well as the Dimensity series. According to Gizmochina.com, two other chipsets have been rumoured aside from the MT6893, which could be new Dimensity chipsets.

Is Mediatek going to take the crown for the fastest chip ever? Will the general public see Mediatek again in a positive light? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
