Qualcomm unveils the Snapdragon 870, the bridge between Snapdragon 865+ and Snapdragon 888

More options mean more choices for customers and manufacturers

This very day, Qualcomm announced a new chipset, dubbed Snapdragon 870 5G, the immediate follow-up to the popular Snapdragon 865 Plus.

The new chipset has been designed to bring enhanced performance that bridges the gap between the flagship processor Snapdragon 888 and the Snapdragon 865 Plus. The SoC is 10% faster than the original Snapdragon 865 and 3% faster than the Snapdragon 865+

The chipset is identical to its predecessor, retaining the same Kryo 585 CPU and Adreno 650 GPU cores, however, the Snapdragon 870’s main difference over the 865+ is that this processor is clocked to 3.2 GHz, making it 3% faster than the Snapdragon 865+ and 10% faster than the 865, think of this new processor as a “Snapdragon 865++”.

Qualcomm said that the new chipset is a marketing response; saying that consumers wanted a processor that is top tier, but does not kill their wallets as well. It does not have the same high-end features as its flagship processor making it a bridge that links between the 865+ and the 888. The company expects that this processor would be available on sub $900 phones (approx. 40k php)

The company said that the SOC will mark its debut around Q1 of this year, with manufacturers like Oppo, Motorola, OnePlus and Xiaomi already planning on producing phones powered by this chipset.
