Google reveals an early look at the next-gen major version of Android as the tech giant opens the first testing phase of Android 13, codenamed “Tiramisu.” The first developer preview was clearly only intended for developers which only features the “first look” of the platform. The first beta build should be available around April while the final and stable build is set to arrive in August.

With the first look of the next release of Android, Android 13 mainly focuses on privacy and security. It brings a lot of system enhancements as well as minor UI changes to the table, including the new system photo picker where users can share both local and cloud-based photos locally. It allows a user to share specific documents of any type with an app, without that app needing permission to view all media files on the device and it serves as an extension to the Android document picker. The feature will eventually make it to more Android users through Google Play system updates running Android 11 and higher, with exceptions to the Android Go devices.

Nearby device permission for Wi-Fi, on the other hand, allows apps to discover and connect to nearby devices over Wi-Fi without having to toggle the location permission, alongside the Quick Settings Placement API which gives users the ease to discover and add custom tiles to Quick Settings.

Meanwhile, Android 13 comes with the new themed app icons which extends the dynamic Material You color palette beyond Google apps to all app icons. With that in mind, Android 13 requires developers to supply their app icons with the monochromatic ones, along with a tweak to the adaptive icon XML.

Android 13 also highlights the per-app language preferences which use a new platform API to set or get the user’s preferred language.

You can now flash the latest Android 13 DP 1 system image to the recently-released Pixel phones such as the Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel 5a, Pixel 5, Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 4a, Pixel 4 XL, or Pixel 4.

According to GSMArena, the build is labeled TPP1.220114.001.
