MediaTek unveils Helio M80 as the company's first modem to support mmWave

To recall, the company has released the Helio M70 together with last year’s Dimensity 1000 line of processors. The modem gives us a special glimpse of sub-6Ghz 5G connectivity but missed out on support for the faster and efficient mmWave spectrum.

Today, MediaTek has finally unveiled the Helio M80, as the company’s first 5G modem to support mmWave connectivity to date. The new modem sports an expeditious downlink for up to 7.67 Gbps and a high-speed uplink of 3.76 Gbps in which exemplifies a slight overhaul over the predecessor’s 4.7 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps speeds respectively.

Other than that, the Helio M80 modem offers a sub-6Ghz frequency with dual connectivity and carrier aggregation, support for NSA (non-standalone) and SA (standalone), dual 5G sim connectivity, dual 5G for NSA and SA, and dual VoNR (Voice over New Radio).

Below is the full list of specifications as mentioned in the press release:

  • 3GPP Release 16 standard
  • Sub-6 GHz and mmWave dual connectivity and carrier aggregation
  • 5G NR (FR1) with more than two carrier aggregation
  • 5G mmWave (FR2) up to 8CC
  • 5G carrier aggregation with Mixed Duplex (TDD + FDD)
  • Dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) ready

The Helio M80 also highlights MediaTek’s new variety of features such as an integrated UltraSave tech for power-saving efficiency and enhancements and “MediaTek’s UltraSave Network Environment Detection and UltraSave OTA Content Awareness technologies dynamically adjust power configuration and operating frequency based on the network environment” as stated in the press release.

In addition, the company also adds that with the M80’s Connected Mode DRX (C-DRX) technology, the modem will regularly remain powered in connected standby even when there is no data activity.

The new modem is expected to reach customers later in 2021, as said in the press release.
