Google reveals Android 12's minimum 6GB RAM requirement

With the imminent release of Android 12 for Pixel devices, Google has revealed the latest Compatibility Definition Document (CDD) for manufacturers to abide by.

Firstly introduced in Android 12, the “Performance Class” standard “defines a set of device capabilities that goes beyond Android’s baseline requirements.” It gives developers ease to determine which feature is suitable for a specific device. For instance, Performance Class 12 could bring the “most premium experience” whereas Performance Class 11 could only bring you the “high-quality experience.”

According to the Android Developers page, “A device can upgrade to a newer platform version without updating its performance class. For example, a device that initially supports performance class 12 can upgrade to Android 13 and continue to report it supports class 12 if it does not meet the class 13 requirements. This means that a performance class provides a way to group devices together without relying on a particular Android version.”

In contrast, it doesn’t really affect 4GB RAM phones as you still get to upgrade your device but comes with several optimizations, ‘without updating its performance class’. Therefore, pick a flagship device to get the maximum experience.

The requirements for Performance Class 11 is as follows:

  • 100MB/s sequential write, 10MB/s random write, 200MB/s sequential read, and 25MB/s random read performance
  • 6GB of RAM
  • 400 dpi and 1080p display resolution
  • 12MP rear camera with 4K 30 fps recording
  • 4MP front camera capable of 1080p 30 fps recording

Performance Class 12 requirements:

  • 120MB/s sequential write, 10MB/s random write, 250MB/s sequential read, and 40MB/s random read performance
  • 6GB of RAM
  • 400 dpi and 1080p display resolution
  • 12MP rear camera with 4K 30 fps recording
  • 4MP front camera capable of 1080p 30 fps recording
