Apple finally ditches the notch on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, calls them 'Dynamic Island' and more

As promised, Apple has launched a variety of new products and innovations during the Apple Event 2022 this morning and the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are two of them. While the first two models from the iPhone 14 series may seem a little bit underwhelming, the Pro and Pro Max models are here to take the spotlight.

Apple’s ‘best iPhone yet’ makes its debut.

The tech giant has finally brought its ‘best iPhone yet’ to the table with its adaptation of the pill-shaped punch-hole cutout — the ‘Dynamic Island.’ It is Apple’s innovative way of ditching the notch from previous models and is only present on the latest Pro and Pro Max models. The company also stayed true to its sensors, for keeping them nice and intact. But it’s not just that, there’s a lot more to see than just Apple’s take on the immersive full-screen experience.

The highlights.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models have a lot to offer, they have managed to maintain their top-of-the-line experience with the inclusion of flagship essentials and never-before-seen features, starting with the Always-On display feature — a new interactive way of staying informed in just a glance.

What comes next is the Emergency SOS via satellite. Now, you might be thinking that Apple’s the first to implement this feature on smartphones but no, Huawei takes the crown for this one with its release of the Mate 50 series. Anyways, this is a never-before-seen feature on an iPhone.

As the name suggests, it utilizes the use of satellites without having to connect to the internet, especially in tight scenarios where you cannot get good reception of a signal. However, this is only used in emergency situations although it’s still a big step in the industry.

Next up is the Crash Detection. Now, this is a feature you wouldn’t want to witness. Similar to ‘fall detection’ seen on Apple Watches, Crash Detection is a feature that can tell when you’re in a car crash.

The never-before-seen feature is accompanied by the temperature sensor on the Apple Watch Series 8. It sounds an alarm the moment you encounter dire scenarios and rings everyone on your emergency contact list (including 911).

The 48MP camera setup, a first on iPhones.

Moving on to the cameras, the top-of-the-line duo comes equipped with an improved and enhanced 48MP triple-camera setup which the company calls the ‘Pro camera system.’

The main camera boasts the quad-pixel sensor with f/1.78 aperture and second-generation ‘sensor-shift’ OIS, joined by 12MP telephoto and 12MP ultra-wide sensors with 120-degree FOV and a TOF 3D LiDAR scanner that serves as its depth. Oh, and there’s a 12MP AF front camera for the pill-shaped punch hole.

The ‘fastest chip ever in a smartphone’.

A brand-new smartphone wouldn’t be complete without an overhaul on its processor, so Apple once again is ahead of the competition with the newly-released 4-nanometer 6-core A16 Bionic processor.

The chipset uses two performance cores and four efficiency cores and is claimed to be 40 percent faster than the competition. A 5-core GPU is also present, as well as a 16-core Neural Engine.

The rise of eSIMs.

Aside from the notch, Apple has also ditched physical SIM card slots in exchange for eSIMs — it may be a major problem at first but it’s only a matter of time to adjust.

But worry not, as the change is only present in the U.S. After all, this is one way to adapt to the current technology as we go through a new era in the industry.

The essentials.

Going back to the essentials, the Pro and Pro Max models of the iPhone 14 lineup opt in for an LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED display with 120Hz ProMotion, HDR10, and Dolby Vision. Screen sizes range from 6.1-inch to 6.7-inch respectively.

In addition, the displays come with a 2000-nits peak outdoor brightness and a 1600-nits peak HDR brightness in scratch-resistance ceramic glass and an oleophobic coating.

As for the battery, it is still undefined though Apple claims all-day battery life for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models. With MagSafe support, of course.
