Google releases Android 16 for Pixel devices, Material 3 Expressive 'later this year'

Google has officially announced the release of Android 16, in a blog post dated Tuesday, June 10, on The Keyword, Google's official publication. The new update is now rolling out to select Pixel devices, 'with more phone brands to come later this year' according to the search engine giant.

"Android 16 lays the foundation for our new Material 3 Expressive design," the announcement reads, suggesting that the update may not include the full Material 3 Expressive experience.

Android 16 is now official

While Material 3 Expressive may not be present in this update, there are features that have been added to this version (via The Keyword):

  • Live Updates — Real-time notifications from delivery apps that update every five minutes.
  • Grouped Notifications — All notifications from a single app are grouped together for simplicity.
  • Enhancements for hearing devices — Android 16 adds an option to switch mics between hearing devices and the phone microphone 'for clearer calls.' It also adds a native volume control for hearing aids.
  • Advanced Protection — Android 16 comes with Advanced Protection that enables safety features such as protection during theft and protection against unsafe apps.
  • Desktop Windowing — Google worked with Samsung to develop desktop windowing. This brings the desktop experience for tablets, which will roll out later this year on compatible devices.
